When Tarla woke, she was disappointed to find herself alone. The sun streamed in through the shutters, and a deep washbowl of water steamed at the end of the bed. Tarla rose, cleaning her body with the sweet-smelling water and replacing her clothes and armour.

When Milva still had not returned, she inspected the pot resting over the fire and discovered a simmering porridge. She tested it and found it thick and salted well; she poured a generous helping into a bowl and sat at the wooden table Targ had dined at the night before.

Before she took her last spoon of porridge, and just as she contemplated refilling the bowl, Milva returned carrying a basket of fresh bread and parsley.

"Morning, lover," Milva said, lighting a gentle kiss on Tarla's waiting lips. "I have news."

Milva went to move, but Tarla grabbed the woman's hips and sat her on her lap as she laughed.

"You jest with me—" but the rest of her words were lost in a kiss as Tarla enjoyed a squeeze of those ripe breasts. She would miss those dearly.

"Tell me of your news, Sweet."

"Your lady of Light is indeed in the castle."

"She is!" Tarla almost stood in her eagerness but managed to restrain herself. "How do you know of this?"

"A few of the Lord Drakon's guards, they drink at the Drake's Head; my sister is the landlady and quite willing to tell me even more than I ask of the goings on of the town."

"Your sister is the landlady?"

"Until her husband returns from war. Lady of Light protect him."

Tarla nodded. "There'll not be a man left to father more soldiers if these Gorthian raids last many years more."

"Aye," Milva sighed and departed Tarla's lap. The darkness of her lost husband and missing sons must have clouded her spirit.

"But you did well, Milva. You may save a Sister of the Light yet, and the Lady of Light will have to look well on such a favour."

Milva turned to her with a smile though it didn't reach her eyes. "I will pray for such a thing."

"I will speak to this sister of yours; it may be that she can tell me of a guard who can be persuaded to let me into the castle." Tarla stood, suddenly reluctant to part ways with Milva, but her duty beckoned. As it always did.

"Farewell, Tarla of Brett. May we meet again before too long."

Tarla took Milva in her arms for one last kiss. "I look forward to it."

She turned then and left, closing the door quickly to shut out any thoughts of delay. Those ripe bosoms could tempt her to linger ever more; serving that sweet woman's flesh could be her life's purpose.

But she had a quest to complete, and she was 'Tarla of Brett' no longer; she was now Tarla, warsister of Rhynn, and she would see that the Sister of the Light was brought home.
